Ladies and Gentlemen:
Last night over 800 Houstonians gathered in 75 homes to share dinner. The remarkable thing about this group is that they represented dozens of different faiths. The occasion was the second annual “Amazing Faith Dinner,” hosted by Interfaith Ministries and the Boniuk Center of The Rice University. In addition to the dinners in Houston, inaugural dinners were also held in Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and Brenham.
For a couple of hours, the participants shared a meal and their feelings about their faith. While their many differences were apparent, most found by the end of the evening that they shared more in common with their dinner partners than they expected at the beginning of the evening. Many new friends were made, many new bridges built.
Many look at the world today and despair at the hatred and violence that abounds. In 1955, Jill Jackson wrote a song that begins, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” Last night 800 Houstonians sang that song, not with lyrics, but with an act of amazing faith and hope.
The third annual Amazing Faith Dinner will be held in November of next year. We are expecting over 250 dinners, hosting in excess of 2,500 participants. There are already groups interested in participating in New York, Los Angeles, London and Istanbul.
